Joy Reid: Why Kamala Harris Shouldn’t Run in 2028

Political commentator Joy Reid recently shared her perspective on why she believes Vice President Kamala Harris should reconsider a presidential run in 2028. During an appearance on the “One54 Africa” podcast, Reid argued that President Joe Biden’s foreign policy decisions have created a significant “stain” that could hinder Harris’s chances.

Biden’s Policies as a ‘Stain’

Reid specifically pointed to Biden’s Middle East policy, particularly concerning Israel and Gaza, calling it an “abomination” and a “stain on his presidency.” She believes that Harris’s association with these policies is still causing her to face protests and backlash wherever she goes.

According to Reid, for Harris to have any chance of winning a presidential election, she would need to publicly distance herself from Biden’s stance on Israel. However, Reid also noted that Harris is known for her loyalty, making such a repudiation unlikely. This complex situation leaves Harris in a difficult position, potentially tied to policies that could undermine her own political future.

Skepticism About a Female President

Beyond the foreign policy concerns, Reid expressed a broader skepticism about America’s readiness for a female president. She stated that she doesn’t believe the U.S. will elect a woman to the highest office “in her lifetime,” a sentiment echoed by former First Lady Michelle Obama. This raises questions about the systemic barriers that might still exist for women in top political roles.

The discussion also touched upon Harris’s own reflections in her book, “107 Days,” where she suggested that campaign planning time might have been insufficient due to political pressures on Biden. This contrasts with former President Donald Trump, who will also be an older candidate if he runs again.

Harris’s Standing and Potential Challengers

Despite these challenges, Kamala Harris continues to poll relatively well among potential 2028 Democratic contenders, reportedly holding 31% of the potential vote. Figures like former George W. Bush advisor Scott Jennings have publicly supported a “Kamala Harris 2028” movement. However, she faces potential competition, including former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who has been outspoken about the current administration’s economic policies and has sparked speculation about his own future ambitions.
