Celebrating Black Joy: This Week’s Uplifting Moments

Feeling overwhelmed by the daily news cycle? Between rising costs, global conflicts, and the general stress of politics, it’s easy to feel like the world is constantly throwing curveballs. But amidst the challenges, there’s an undeniable and powerful current of Black joy and Black excellence flowing through our communities. This week, we’ve gathered some truly uplifting moments that are sure to boost your spirits.

HBCU History Made at March Madness

Howard University, affectionately known as ‘The Mecca,’ etched its name in history during the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The Bison secured their very first tournament win, triumphing over UMBC with a nail-biting 86-83 victory in the First Four on March 17th. Though their tournament run ended in the first round against top-seeded Michigan, this historic win is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of HBCU athletes.

Coach Kenneth Blakeney expressed immense pride in his players, highlighting Bryce Howard and Ose Okojie for their outstanding performance. This achievement is a significant moment for Howard University and a source of immense pride for the entire HBCU community.

Dancing Through a Century: A 100th Birthday Celebration

In Queens, New York, a remarkable woman named Norma Hyatt recently celebrated her 100th birthday in true style – dancing to Bob Marley surrounded by loved ones! Hyatt, who immigrated from Kingston, Jamaica, in 1955 and had a fulfilling 34-year career as a lab technician, proved that age is just a number when it comes to joy and vitality.

During the vibrant celebration, Hyatt was honored with a Citation of Honor from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. Her simple yet profound advice for a long and happy life? “Love your neighbors.” A beautiful reminder of the power of community and connection.

Supporting the Hustle: New Edition’s Generosity

Talk about a feel-good moment in cooperative economics! While on tour with Boyz II Men and Toni Braxton, the legendary R&B group New Edition made a group of enterprising men in Philadelphia incredibly happy. Michael Bivins and other members of the group encountered some guys selling bootleg New Edition merchandise from their tour bus.

Instead of taking issue, Michael Bivins decided to support their entrepreneurial spirit by purchasing several items. It’s a fantastic example of artists recognizing and supporting the hustle of fans, turning a potentially awkward situation into a win-win.

Bridal Bliss Expands: Pantora Bridal Opens in Baltimore

Exciting news for brides-to-be in the DMV area! Pantora Bridal, the chic and sophisticated Black woman-owned bridal boutique with a thriving Brooklyn location, has officially opened its second brick-and-mortar store in Baltimore, Maryland. Owner Andrea Pitter expressed her deep gratitude for the community’s support.

She shared on Instagram, “For years, the DMV has shown up for this brand in a real way, building community with us even when we didn’t have a physical home here. To now plant roots here and serve this community in creative ways, means everything to me.” This expansion is a beautiful symbol of Black entrepreneurship and community building.
