WNBA & Players Union Reach Historic CBA Deal

This is huge news for women’s basketball! After more than a year of intense negotiations, the WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) have finally reached a groundbreaking agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This deal is being hailed as a major victory for player empowerment and a significant financial boost for the league’s athletes.

Transformational Financial Gains for Players

The centerpiece of this new CBA is a dramatic increase in player compensation. The salary cap is set to skyrocket to approximately $7 million, a massive jump from just $1.5 million in 2025. This signals a substantial investment in the league’s talent and a recognition of the players’ value.

Under the new agreement, top-tier players can now earn ‘supermax’ salaries nearing $1.4 million. The average salary is projected to climb to around $600,000, and perhaps most impressively, the minimum salary will now exceed $300,000—a staggering increase from the previous deal’s roughly $66,000. This is truly a game-changer for WNBA athletes.

Revenue Sharing and Player Empowerment

Equally significant is the hard-won revenue-sharing agreement. Players are now set to receive nearly 20% of the league’s revenue on average throughout the agreement’s term. This crucial change directly ties player earnings to the league’s overall success, creating a powerful incentive for continued growth and popularity.

WNBPA executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson summed it up perfectly, stating, ‘I think this can be summed up in two words: player empowerment.’ She emphasized the players’ collective strength and the power of their union in achieving this milestone. Nneka Ogwumike also expressed pride, noting, ‘We always told you all we were going to stand on business, and that’s what this looks like.’

Enhanced Benefits and a Professionalized League

Beyond the financial aspects, the new CBA also codifies improvements in player benefits and working conditions. This includes enhanced travel standards, expanded support systems, and upgraded resources for teams. These changes further professionalize the league and elevate the overall player experience.

This agreement marks a pivotal moment for the WNBA, driven by surging viewership, increased investment, and undeniable cultural impact. It ushers in a new era where WNBA athletes are compensated in a manner that truly reflects their talent, dedication, and value to the sport. It’s a monumental victory for the players and the future of women’s basketball.
