A significant development in the legal case against New Orleans rapper Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Tyler. The 55-year-old artist has pleaded guilty to third-degree rape charges, a plea that comes nearly two years after his initial arrest on more severe accusations.
From First-Degree Rape Accusations to a Guilty Plea
In 2022, Tyler was initially accused of first-degree rape, along with charges of simple criminal damage to property, domestic abuse battery by strangulation, simple robbery, and false imprisonment. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that the alleged victim identified Mystikal as her assailant after an incident at a local hospital. The accusations detailed a disturbing scenario where Tyler allegedly choked and raped the woman, believing she had stolen money from him.
He reportedly physically assaulted her, stole her keys, and forced her to send him funds via Cash App. By pleading guilty to the lesser charge of third-degree rape, Mystikal avoids a potential life sentence, though he still faces a maximum of 25 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for June.
A History of Legal Troubles
This is not the first time the Grammy-nominated artist, known for hits like “Shake Ya A**” and “Danger,” has faced serious legal issues. Mystikal has been charged with rape three times over the past two decades. He was convicted of his first crime in 2003 and served six years in prison, registering as a sex offender upon his release.
In 2012, he was arrested and convicted of domestic abuse, serving three months in jail. While charges related to rape and kidnapping in 2017 were ultimately dropped, the pattern of alleged offenses is concerning. Reports from All Hip Hop suggest that during the alleged assault in the current case, Tyler may have been under the influence of drugs and forced the victim to participate in a ritualistic cleansing before the attack.
Tyler initially denied the allegations, claiming the accusation was an attempt at extortion. However, his guilty plea marks a critical turning point in the case, bringing a degree of closure to the legal proceedings while highlighting a troubling history of alleged violence.
