Disgraced entertainer R. Kelly has reportedly been released from solitary confinement and returned to the general population at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina. The singer, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering, sex trafficking, and child pornography charges, spent approximately two weeks in isolation.
Investigation into Phone Number Possession
Kelly’s release from special housing occurred on March 14, following an investigation into how he obtained the phone number of a retired prison official. According to his attorney, Beau Brindley, “No impropriety whatsoever was found with respect to his possession of the telephone number of a former prison official.” Brindley further stated that Kelly was held in solitary confinement for about two weeks “without legitimate cause before the facility was compelled to release him.”
Brindley explained that Kelly acquired the number through his participation in a prison mentorship program. The retired warden had given Kelly his contact information, encouraging him to reach out for guidance. This relationship was established within the context of the program, and Kelly’s possession of the number was directly linked to his involvement.
Attorney Accuses Officials of Unfair Treatment
Upon discovering the phone number, prison officials placed Kelly in solitary confinement for an investigation. However, after finding no wrongdoing, they were compelled to release him. Brindley has accused the facility officials of unfairly holding Kelly without legitimate cause, suggesting the entire ordeal was an overreaction to his participation in the mentorship program.
