Get ready for some friendly competition! Former President Barack Obama and Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards have reignited their playful rivalry, this time in a fun video promoting the upcoming Obama Presidential Center. It seems their “beef” from the 2024 Olympics is far from over, and we’re here for it!
A Text, a Challenge, and Games Galore
The video kicks off with Obama settling in for an interview, only to be interrupted by a text message from none other than Anthony Edwards. This leads to a quick back-and-forth, culminating in Obama stepping outside to find Edwards practicing his jump shots. Naturally, the former President couldn’t resist engaging with the NBA star, citing “unfinished business.”
What follows is a series of friendly games: Connect 4, basketball, and ping-pong. The competition is fierce but lighthearted, showcasing the genuine camaraderie between the two. As they wrap up their games, they even dip their feet in a pool, already discussing a rematch.
The Rivalry’s Origin
This isn’t the first time Obama and Edwards have traded verbal jabs. Their initial interaction in 2024, as the U.S. men’s basketball team prepared for the Paris Olympics, quickly went viral. Edwards confidently declared himself “the truth” on the court to Obama and fellow Team USA member Joel Embiid, a moment captured for the Netflix docuseries “Court of Gold.”
Edwards’ confidence remained unshaken, even when Obama playfully inquired about his skills to LeBron James and Kevin Durant. Their banter continued at the NBA All-Star Game in February, where Obama joked to coach JB Bickerstaff that he had “worn [Edwards] out yesterday.” Edwards quickly retorted, admitting Obama “did alright for an old man though.”
Inspiration and a Promise
Obama’s presence clearly served as inspiration for Edwards, who went on to win MVP honors at the All-Star Game. In a post-game interview, Edwards affectionately called Obama “my favorite person in the world,” recalling their time together and promising to “put on a show for him.”
The video concludes with Obama inviting Edwards to a rematch on his “home court at the Obama Presidential Center on the South Side of Chicago.” This collaboration highlights the center’s mission to inspire future generations and foster community engagement, all while keeping the friendly rivalry alive.
