Miss J’s Heartbreaking Health Update: Stroke Leaves ANTM Judge Wheelchair-Bound

Fans of “America’s Next Top Model” are getting a raw and emotional look at the life of runway coach and judge Miss J. In the new Netflix documentary “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” J. Alexander Jenkins, known affectionately as Miss J, shares a heartbreaking update on his health following a severe stroke.

A Devastating Stroke and Its Aftermath

Miss J revealed that he suffered a stroke on December 27, 2022. The incident was so severe that it left him unable to walk or speak, forcing him into a coma for five weeks. He spent a staggering year and a half in the hospital, undergoing the arduous process of relearning basic functions.

Reflecting on the experience, Miss J shared his emotional struggle: “I couldn’t walk, and I couldn’t talk, and I thought to myself, ‘What was I going to do?’… It was emotional. I cried. I’m not ashamed to say that I cried.” As of February 2026, he still cannot walk, a stark contrast to his former life as the “Queen of the Catwalk.”

Reflections on ‘Top Model’ and Tyra Banks

The documentary also delves into the complex relationships formed during “America’s Next Top Model.” Miss J, along with fellow judges Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker, was abruptly let go in 2012 due to network changes. He recalled a particularly poignant moment where Tyra Banks sent him flowers for his birthday, only for him to be fired five days later.

Despite the abrupt exit from the show, Miss J continued to work internationally and teach at the Savannah College of Art and Design, maintaining his connection to the fashion world until his stroke. The documentary reportedly offers a critical look at some of the show’s past practices.

Friendship and Resilience

Miss J noted that Banks had not visited him in person, though she had reached out via text expressing a desire to do so. However, his bond with former co-judges Manuel and Barker remains strong. Barker shared a touching memory of visiting Miss J in the hospital, describing the emotional reunion and mutual tears.

Despite the immense challenges he faces, Miss J remains determined. “I miss being the queen of the runway, the catwalks, of course,” he shared emotionally. “I’m the person who taught models how to walk … and now I can’t walk. Not yet, not yet. I’m determined to walk. I’m sure you’re going to see me again. I’m sure it’s not over for me yet.”
