The dance community is mourning the loss of Donyelle Denise Wilson, known to fans worldwide as Donyelle Jones. The talented hip-hop and jazz dancer, a standout finalist from Season 2 of “So You Think You Can Dance,” passed away on December 2nd at the age of 46 after a courageous, years-long battle with breast cancer.
A Spirited Journey
An announcement shared on her official Instagram page remembered Donyelle as “A wife. A daughter. A sister” and a “friend,” who “kicked cancer’s ass every single day she was here.” Her spirit was described as one that never dimmed, her heart never hardened, and her smile remained even through immense challenges. Her positive outlook and resilience were truly inspiring.
Donyelle first captured national attention in 2006 on “So You Think You Can Dance.” Her electrifying style, exceptional musicality, and undeniable charisma propelled her to a third-place finish, making her a fan favorite and an inspiration to aspiring dancers everywhere.
Battling Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer
Life took a challenging turn for Donyelle when she was diagnosed with stage 3C breast cancer in 2016. The disease later progressed to stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, meaning it had spread to other parts of her body. Despite the relentless nature of metastatic disease, Donyelle’s determination never faltered. In 2024, she told I’m A Dancer Against Cancer (DAC), “I can & I will move forward,” as the organization awarded her a grant to support her care. Just seven days before her passing, she spoke with grace and clarity, acknowledging the end of her journey while remaining surrendered to a higher will and holding onto hope.
Dance as a Safe Place
Throughout her treatment, Donyelle openly shared her experiences with honesty and hope. A significant milestone was teaching her first dance class in four years on July 6th, which she called a “bday gift to myself.” She captioned the Instagram video, “DANCE IS MY SAFE PLACE… I needed this moment. I need my community. Dance is the vehicle I’ve used most to help me live out my purpose, pursue my dreams, heal my pain, and celebrate my victories.”
