It seems not everything is as it appears on ‘Selling Sunset.’ Mary Bonnet is looking back at Season 9 and feels the version of her that viewers saw on screen was far from the full story. She recently told US Weekly that she felt she received a ‘bad edit’ this season, suggesting that crucial context was left out.
The Impact of a Home Robbery
A significant source of Mary’s stress during filming was a harrowing home robbery. This experience left her deeply shaken and sleep-deprived, constantly on edge. She explained that her reactions, which viewers saw on screen, were justified by the fear and anxiety she felt, especially with neighbors also experiencing break-ins.
Her husband, Romain Bonnet, echoed her sentiments, stating that much of what was happening outside the cameras wasn’t shown. He expressed sadness that viewers weren’t getting the complete picture, leading to potential misunderstandings about Mary’s behavior.
Tension with Chelsea Lazkani
Season 9 also heavily featured the growing distance between Mary and her co-star Chelsea Lazkani. Fans online have accused the show of unfair treatment towards Chelsea, who is the only Black woman on the cast, suggesting she faced discrimination from production. Mary believes her own issues with Chelsea were exacerbated by moments she felt were orchestrated by the show’s producers.
She specifically pointed to a flower delivery that aired shortly after her robbery, which she felt was not genuine. Mary stated, ‘I was mad at production for doing that to me right after the robbery.’ This alleged orchestration fueled the tension, which visibly escalated during a group dinner where Brett Oppenheim even asked the cameras to stop filming.
Moving Forward and Staying Grounded
Mary hinted that much more transpired between her and Chelsea than what viewers witnessed on screen, suggesting it would take a significant effort for them to become close again. Despite the challenges and the alleged manipulation by production, Mary is focusing on her personal growth.
She explained that she’s been taking steps to stay true to herself and handle situations better, acknowledging that while she can’t control all circumstances, she’s trying her best. Meanwhile, viewers have voiced their strong opinions, threatening to boycott the show if Chelsea isn’t treated with more respect or if she’s removed from the cast.
