This year, Giving Tuesday (December 2nd) carries an extra weight, especially for Black-led nonprofits and businesses. Many are facing a critical situation: shrinking government funding coupled with soaring demand for their services. It’s a challenging landscape, making your support more vital than ever.
The Funding Squeeze
Economic uncertainty has been a major theme throughout 2025, exacerbated by factors like tariffs and significant cuts to government grants. The Urban Institute reported that in 2021, nonprofits received around $267 billion from federal and state governments. However, these crucial funding streams have been drastically reduced, leaving many organizations struggling to operate.
This funding gap means that donations received on Giving Tuesday are not just helpful; they are essential for these organizations to continue their critical work in communities across the nation.
Organizations Stepping Up
Organizations like the African American Small Business Foundation, Inc. are calling on supporters for help. Their campaign, running from December 2nd to 31st, aims to bolster Black-owned businesses in New York City. They emphasize that supporting these businesses is about more than just financial aid; it’s about uplifting families, creating jobs, and stimulating economic growth.
Similarly, Black Public Media recently highlighted their urgent need for support after losing $1.8 million in funding from Congress in 2025. Executive Director Leslie Fields-Cruz stresses the importance of public media reflecting all Americans, a mission that relies heavily on community donations.
How You Can Make a Difference
Every contribution, no matter the size, can make a significant impact. Even a donation of $5 can help energize Black-owned and Black-led nonprofits and businesses during this challenging period. These organizations are the backbone of many communities, providing essential services and opportunities.
