Suspect Charged with Murder After National Guard Member Dies

The man accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington D.C. now faces a first-degree murder charge following the death of one of the soldiers. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced the upgraded charges on Friday, marking a grim escalation in the case.

Charges Upgraded After Soldier’s Death

Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, were critically injured in a shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon. Both soldiers, deployed with the West Virginia National Guard as part of a federal crime-fighting mission, were hospitalized in serious condition. President Donald Trump announced Beckstrom’s death on Thursday evening.

The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, now faces additional charges, including one count of first-degree murder. His existing charges now also include three counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. U.S. Attorney Pirro indicated that more charges are expected as the investigation continues.

A Heroic Service Cut Short

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey stated that Staff Sgt. Wolfe remains in “very critical condition.” He ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Specialist Beckstrom, calling the two soldiers “West Virginia heroes” who were “maliciously attacked” while serving their country. Beckstrom had enlisted in 2023 shortly after graduating high school and was recognized for her leadership and dedication.

Beckstrom had volunteered for “Operation D.C. Safe and Beautiful” to help ensure the safety of the nation’s capital. Her death has been described by officials as a tragic loss, highlighting the risks faced by service members even when deployed domestically.

Suspect’s Background and Immigration Status

Information emerging about the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, indicates he immigrated to the United States in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a program designed to resettle Afghans following the U.S. withdrawal from the country. According to individuals who knew him, Lakanwal previously served in a CIA-backed Afghan Army unit, working as a security guard and later a team leader and GPS specialist.

His asylum application was approved under the Trump administration, though he entered the U.S. during the Biden administration. President Trump has publicly commented on the case, suggesting Lakanwal “went cuckoo” and calling for a reinvestigation of Afghan refugees admitted under the Biden administration. Advocates for the program maintain that extensive vetting processes were in place.

Ongoing Investigation and Motive

U.S. Attorney Pirro declined to discuss the suspect’s motive, stating that investigators are working diligently to determine it. Warrants are being executed in Washington state, where Lakanwal resided with his wife and five children, as well as other parts of the country. The investigation aims to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
