Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ Musical Premieres in Minneapolis

Get ready to be transported back to the electric world of Prince! The legendary “Purple Rain,” both the film and the album, has been reimagined as a stage musical, making its world debut right where it all began: Minneapolis. This production is more than just a show; it’s a homecoming, a heartfelt tribute to the icon who forever shaped music and his beloved hometown.

A Minneapolis Homecoming

Opening its curtains on November 5, 2025, at the State Theater, the musical embraced its roots. Located just steps away from venues where Prince played some of his earliest shows and a backdrop for scenes in the original film, the city embraced the production with open arms. The theater, adorned in purple, buzzed with anticipation, filled with fans and celebrities like Spike Lee, all eager to witness this new interpretation.

The musical adaptation kicks off with the unforgettable line, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today, to get through this thing called life,” setting the stage for a journey through the semi-autobiographical story Prince penned in the early 80s. The show delves into the life of a talented yet troubled young musician navigating the Minneapolis club scene.

The Cast and the Score

Leading the cast is newcomer Kris Kollins, making his professional stage debut as the central character, “The Kid.” He’s joined by Rachel Webb as Apollonia, a Texas native whose powerhouse vocals and dance background bring depth to the role. Even the antagonist, Morris Day, portrayed by Jared Howelton, injects perfect comedic timing, balancing the play’s heavier themes of domestic violence and suicidal ideation with much-needed levity.

The musical’s score is a carefully curated selection of Prince’s timeless hits. Musical director James Davis collaborated with Bobby Z and Michael Hayes, who worked closely with Prince, to ensure the nearly two dozen songs captured the authentic feel of the original soundtrack. This iconic album, which launched Prince into superstardom, earned two Grammy Awards and dominated the Billboard charts for 24 consecutive weeks.

An Emotional Climax

As the nearly three-hour show draws to a close, the final scene delivers an emotional punch. Kollins offers a moving rendition of the title track, “Purple Rain,” complete with Prince’s signature guitar solo, as his bandmates reconcile. The State Theater audience responded with a well-deserved standing ovation, a testament to the powerful performance and the enduring legacy of the music.

While an official Broadway premiere date is still under wraps, hints suggest it could be as early as Spring 2026. The Minneapolis run continued until November 23, leaving audiences deeply moved.

Experiencing Prince’s Minneapolis

It’s hard to believe it will soon be ten years since Prince’s passing in 2016. Yet, his love for his hometown and Minneapolis’s love for him remain palpable.
