Comedian Mike Epps is setting the record straight. After facing significant backlash for comments made about prison release celebrations and food stamps, Epps took to social media to clarify his remarks, stating they were “misunderstood.”
Clarifying Prison Release Celebrations
Epps addressed the criticism head-on, explaining his perspective on celebrating individuals returning home from prison. He affirmed his support for reform but expressed concern about sending the wrong message to younger generations.
“I might have said it the wrong way, but what I was trying to say is, we don’t want to send kids mixed messages about coming home from prison being celebrated,” Epps stated. He clarified that he wasn’t suggesting people shouldn’t be celebrated, but rather that the narrative shouldn’t glorify lengthy prison sentences as a path to celebration.
This clarification comes after comments made on Jim Jones’ “Artist 2 Artist” podcast, where Epps reportedly said, “Those are the wrong journeys to celebrate… You are a failure. Get your ass out here and help these kids, n—a, pay that back forward.” He has since apologized to anyone who was offended by his remarks.
Addressing Food Stamp Controversy
The comedian also tackled the controversy surrounding his statements about food stamps (SNAP benefits). Epps explained that his comments, made during an appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” were also misinterpreted.
He stated, “What I was saying is that we need to break the cycle of being on food stamps.” Epps highlighted the issue of multi-generational reliance on assistance, noting, “There are three generations of people who have been on food stamps, of grandmother, mother, and daughter, that’s crazy. We gotta do better.”
While acknowledging that some individuals genuinely need assistance, Epps expressed concern about people taking advantage of the system. He believes that while assistance is sometimes necessary, the goal should be to move towards self-sufficiency.
Epps concluded his video message with a broad apology, hoping to mend any fences and ensure his intentions were understood. He emphasized the need for progress and better outcomes within the community.
