Dangote Refinery Expansion: A Major Partnership

Get ready for some major news in the energy sector! Aliko Dangote, widely recognized as the richest Black man on the planet, is teaming up with a powerhouse American company, Honeywell International Inc. This dynamic partnership is all about supercharging the Dangote Refinery in Lagos, Nigeria.

Doubling Down on Production Capacity

The goal? To dramatically increase the refinery’s output. We’re talking about boosting its production capacity to an impressive 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) by the year 2028. That’s essentially doubling its current output, a massive leap forward for Nigeria’s energy landscape.

This isn’t just about more oil; it’s about smarter processing. The agreement with Honeywell will bring cutting-edge technology and essential services, allowing the refinery to handle a much wider variety of crude oil grades. Think of it as upgrading the refinery’s toolkit to be more versatile and efficient.

Honeywell’s Crucial Role

Honeywell, a respected Fortune 100 company, isn’t just lending its name. They’ll be supplying critical components like catalysts, specialized equipment, and advanced industrial solutions to fuel this ambitious expansion. Their expertise is key to making this vision a reality.

But the expansion doesn’t stop at crude processing. The refinery also plans to ramp up its polypropylene production significantly, aiming for 2.4 million metric tons per year. This will be achieved through a license for Honeywell’s advanced Oleflex technology, which is vital for producing polypropylene used in everything from packaging to car parts.

A History of Collaboration

This isn’t the first time Dangote Refinery and Honeywell have joined forces. Back in 2017, UOP LLC, a division of Honeywell, provided crucial equipment, including systems for catalyst and dryer regeneration, high-performance column trays, and heat exchanger tubes. This existing relationship likely smooths the path for the current, larger-scale collaboration.

The Financial Picture and Current Status

While the exact financial terms of this new agreement haven’t been made public, sources close to the project suggest the contract could potentially exceed $250 million, depending on the full scope of work. It’s a substantial investment in Nigeria’s industrial future.

Currently, the Dangote Refinery is already a titan, processing 650,000 bpd. This makes it the largest refinery in Africa and the world’s biggest single-train refinery. Its design focuses on meeting Nigeria’s domestic fuel needs while also exporting surplus production.

This expansion is part of a larger strategic vision. In July, there was a plan announced to increase production to 700,000 bpd by the end of 2025. And just recently, in October, Dangote revealed plans to essentially double the refinery’s capacity by adding a second single-train unit within the next three years. Once fully realized, this expanded facility could process almost all of Nigeria’s current crude oil production, estimated at around 1.5 million bpd.
