Meet Joi Brown, a true trailblazer who has navigated the dynamic music industry and is now building a powerful platform to celebrate and empower Black innovators. As the CEO of Culture Creators, Brown has transformed her passion for bringing people together into a thriving enterprise that uplifts culture shifters and mentors the next generation of leaders.
From Music Marketing to Cultural Leadership
With a distinguished career as SVP of Marketing at Atlantic Records and Head of Strategic Partnerships at ICM, Joi Brown has a deep understanding of the media and entertainment landscape. However, her journey wasn’t without personal sacrifice. The demanding nature of her roles often meant missed family moments, a reality many working mothers face. “No one sees the sacrifice that goes into building other people’s dreams,” Brown shared, reflecting on the personal cost of her career.
Now embracing life as a full-time mompreneur, Brown has turned her focus to Culture Creators, a venture she founded in 2016. Initially, she wasn’t sure what it would become, only knowing she wanted to foster connection. “I just knew that I wanted people to get together,” she explained. “I was just passionate about people, about making sure that we know that we are stakeholders in each other’s success, and that we need one another.”
The Power of Connection: Culture Creators Awards
The annual Culture Creators Innovators and Leaders Awards Brunch is a testament to Brown’s vision. This year’s event honored notable figures like Larry Wilmore, Joy-Ann Reid, and Keke Palmer. Brown describes the atmosphere as a “family reunion” – purposeful, supportive, and community-driven. It’s a space designed for people to connect, share stories, and collaborate.
It’s about putting people in a room and saying: How can we collaborate? How can we break bread together, and how can we make money together? — Joi Brown, Founder & CEO of Culture Creators
Empowering the Next Generation
Beyond the awards, the Culture Creators Foundation plays a crucial role in mentoring and providing opportunities for diverse emerging leaders. Brown recognized a significant gap in career awareness within the entertainment industry among young people. “When I talked to them, they had no idea that there could be a job in the music industry like mine,” she noted. This realization led to the creation of educational programs and scholarships.
Brown emphasizes the importance of access – whether it’s to funding, C-suite executives, or vital information. Culture Creators aims to be a conduit, connecting individuals with the resources they need to pursue their dreams. Her daughters are now actively involved in the business, bringing fresh energy and insights, making it a true family endeavor.
