Awards season is heating up! The Critics Choice Association has just unveiled the shortlists for the below-the-line categories at the upcoming 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards, and it’s a strong showing for Black-led projects and creatives.
‘Sinners’ Dominates the Craft Categories
Leading the pack with an impressive 13 shortlist mentions is Warner Bros.’ “Sinners.” This film, which has been gaining traction since its April release, secured nods in every single below-the-line category. This includes recognition for Hannah Beachler’s production design and Ruth E. Carter’s stunning costume work, adding another high-profile year for the Oscar-winning designer.
These craft categories—covering everything from casting and cinematography to editing and sound—often serve as early indicators for which films will be technical frontrunners throughout awards season. “Sinners’” widespread recognition suggests it’s a major contender.
Strong Showing for Other Notable Films
Following closely behind “Sinners” is the drama “F1,” starring Damson Idris as a rising Formula One driver. This Apple Original Films/Warner Bros. collaboration garnered nine nominations across categories like cinematography, visual effects, and best film score. Its technical excellence and Idris’s powerful performance position “F1” as a potential dark horse this awards season.
The shortlists also highlighted a diverse range of talent. Paul Tazewell received a nod for his costume design on “Wicked: For Good,” while emerging artist Aiyana-Lee earned a spot on the Best Song list for “Highest 2 Lowest.” The music from “Sinners” also made a significant impact, with three original songs shortlisted, including contributions from Raphael Saadiq and Miles Caton and Alice Smith.
What to Expect from the Ceremony
The 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards ceremony is set to broadcast live on E! and USA Network on Sunday, January 4, 2026. The telecast will continue its combined format, celebrating both film and television achievements.
While these shortlists offer a compelling preview, the full nominations are expected on December 5th. This will provide the first major indication of the potential contenders shaping the awards landscape, ultimately leading up to the Oscars.
