Cicero police have confirmed that a death investigation is underway, which is standard procedure for any unexpected fatality occurring during an athletic event. The Matador Fighter Challenge, promoted as “the ultimate MMA and Thai event,” continued as scheduled, but the mood was undoubtedly somber after the incident.

Event promoter Joe Goyita expressed his profound shock and sadness in a public statement on Facebook. “This is a post I hoped to never make,” Goyita wrote, detailing how Johnson collapsed towards the end of his fight and was transported to the hospital. He extended his “deepest condolences to his family, friends, and teammates,” noting that more information would be shared once medical reports are finalized.
