WNBA Players Could Earn Over $1.1M Max Salary

Get ready for some exciting news in the WNBA! As negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) heat up, reports indicate a substantial leap in player compensation is on the horizon. This proposed deal could see the maximum salary for players soar to over $1.1 million annually.

A Major Leap in Player Salaries

Sources close to the talks suggest that the new CBA, with a deadline of November 30th, could establish a minimum salary starting at over $220,000. Furthermore, the average player salary is projected to exceed $460,000. These figures represent a significant increase from the current maximum salary, which hovers around $250,000.

The proposed numbers would see salary increases each year of the agreement. This potential boost is a result of ongoing negotiations between the league and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA). The WNBPA has been advocating for two key points: enhanced revenue sharing and improved salary structures.

Revenue Sharing and NBA Comparisons

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged the upcoming salary increases in an appearance on the Today show, stating that players “are going to get a big increase in this cycle of collective bargaining. And they deserve it.” However, he noted that the term ‘share’ might not be the most accurate way to view the increase, given the vast revenue difference between the NBA and WNBA.

Currently, WNBA players receive about 9.3% of the league’s income, a stark contrast to NBA players who receive approximately 50% of their league’s income. The new CBA proposal includes revenue sharing, which could allow more than one player per team to reach the maximum salary, with this number growing annually.

A Step Towards Greater Equity

This potential salary increase is a significant step towards greater financial equity for WNBA players, reflecting their growing impact and the league’s increasing popularity. The negotiations are ongoing, with both sides slated to meet on November 19th to finalize the terms of this potentially game-changing agreement.
