The 2026 Grammy nominations are here, and the race for Album of the Year is heating up! Among the contenders is Leon Thomas, a multi-talented artist whose 14-track project, ‘MUTT,’ is making waves. This album is a vibrant blend of Jazz, Neo-Soul, and Rock, showcasing Thomas’s evolution as a musician.
From Broadway to ‘MUTT’
Released in 2024, ‘MUTT’ is Thomas’s second album, following his debut ‘Electric Dusk.’ It’s clear he’s poured his heart and soul into this project, drawing inspiration from legends like Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin. The result is a richly layered sound that highlights his keen ear for production and artistic vision.
Thomas, who got his start as a child star on Broadway and Nickelodeon, spoke to Essence about his journey. He shared that ‘MUTT’ represents him stepping into his confidence, especially after navigating the challenging transition from child actor to music artist in his twenties. Now in his thirties, he’s proving he knows his craft and is enjoying the ride.
Collaborations and Credits
Collaboration was a key ingredient in ‘MUTT.’ Tracks like ‘Lucid Dreams’ featuring Masego and ‘Feelings on Silent’ with Wale are standout examples. Thomas emphasized that most of these features were recorded with the artists present, highlighting his belief that ‘every collaboration is a new class.’
Beyond his own album, Leon Thomas has an impressive resume as a writer and producer for major artists. He’s worked with the likes of Freddie Gibbs, Post Malone, Jack Harlow, Drake, and SZA. Notably, he co-produced SZA’s ‘Snooze,’ which won the Grammy for Best R&B Song in 2024.
The Competition for Album of the Year
The Album of the Year category is particularly exciting this year because, as the Recording Academy points out, it’s guaranteed to crown a first-time winner. While some nominees have been recognized before, none have taken home this prestigious award yet. The other nominees include:
- Bad Bunny – “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS”
- Justin Bieber – “SWAG”
- Sabrina Carpenter – “Man’s Best Friend”
- Clipse – “Let God Sort Em Out”
- Lady Gaga – “MAYHEM”
- Kendrick Lamar – “GNX”
- Tyler, The Creator – “Chromakopia”
Each of these albums brings a unique flavor, from Bad Bunny’s exploration of Puerto Rican traditions to Kendrick Lamar’s introspective Hip-Hop. It’s a testament to the incredible diversity and talent in music today.
