Eugene “Big U” Henley, currently behind bars, is facing a difficult situation as prosecutors are actively trying to prevent him from attending his son’s funeral. New court filings paint a picture of alleged misconduct within the jail, raising serious concerns about his trustworthiness outside the facility.
Allegations of Jail Phone Misconduct
According to prosecutors, Big U is accused of orchestrating a ‘phone hustle’ from inside the jail. The filings claim he illicitly used multiple inmate phone accounts, making hundreds of unauthorized calls. It’s alleged that other inmates even helped him by using their voices for the monitoring system, allowing him to speak more freely.
Investigators were particularly alerted by the content of these secret conversations, a significant portion of which reportedly involved intimate discussions with a girlfriend, not his wife. These calls allegedly included plotting to sneak in racy photos and engaging in other rule-violating chats.
Further Accusations and Legal Maneuvers
The accusations don’t stop there. Authorities also claim that Big U and his girlfriend planned for her to enroll in a paralegal class to gain special visitation access. Furthermore, he’s accused of using coded language to pressure co-defendants and even contacting a confidential informant. He’s also alleged to have discussed raising large sums of money for legal defense, despite having a court-appointed lawyer.
These allegations come at a critical time, as Big U is petitioning the court for permission to attend the funeral of his 34-year-old son, Jabari Henley, who tragically passed away on Halloween. His attorney has stated that the loss has deeply affected him and that attending the burial is crucial for his grieving process.
A Judge’s Decision Looms
The judge is now tasked with weighing these serious allegations against Big U’s plea to mourn his son. The prosecution’s argument centers on the belief that allowing him out of jail, even for a funeral, would pose a risk to the community and that he cannot be trusted to adhere to any temporary release conditions.
