Miami is rolling out the red carpet for Pharrell Williams! The iconic artist and producer was recently honored with the key to the city, a fitting tribute to his significant impact on the vibrant cultural and creative landscape of the 305. The ceremony took place during the 5th Annual Black Ambition Demo Day, held at Sacred Space Miami.
Celebrating Black Innovation and Ownership
The key to the city wasn’t just for his music; it also recognized Pharrell’s deep involvement in Miami’s scene, from co-owning popular spots like Swan and Strawberry Moon to his dedicated work in fostering Black innovation and entrepreneurship. Williams, who launched the nonprofit Black Ambition in 2020, aims to provide funding, mentorship, and opportunities for Black, Latinx, Hispanic, and underrepresented founders.
“There’s so much brilliance out there that never gets seen,” Williams stated at the event. “That’s why we built Black Ambition, to make sure talent doesn’t stop at potential.”
A Night of Opportunity and Inspiration
The Black Ambition Demo Day brought together investors, artists, and aspiring founders for a celebration of access and opportunity. This year, nearly 2,500 entrepreneurs applied for the Black Ambition Prize, with 25 finalists receiving over $1 million in awards. Six standout founders even took the stage to present ventures tackling critical issues like food insecurity, maternal and infant mortality, and inclusivity in skincare.
The event was further energized by a surprise performance from Chance the Rapper and support from major national partners like Visa, Louis Vuitton, Adidas, and the Lennar Foundation.
Pharrell’s Candid Thoughts on Politics
During a candid fireside chat with Mellody Hobson, President and Co-CEO of Ariel Investments, moderated by Hatcher, Pharrell opened up about his journey. He spoke about growing up in the projects, navigating ADHD, and how music became his anchor.
The conversation took a turn when politics entered the discussion. Williams didn’t hold back, expressing a strong dislike for the political landscape. He described it as “a magic trick that isn’t real.”
I don’t believe in either side, because if you’re on either side, you’re supporting division. — Pharrell Williams
He elaborated, suggesting that focusing on division hinders progress and that the community needs to move beyond simply being the inspiration for American capitalism to actively capitalizing on it. His remarks highlight a desire for unity and a more constructive approach to societal advancement.
