Imagine leaving your car for just a moment and returning to find it – and your child – gone! That’s exactly what happened to a mother in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, when her 10-year-old son decided to take matters into his own hands after a disagreement at school.
A Quick Trip Home
The incident began at W.A. Wright Elementary School. The boy’s mother went inside briefly to drop off some paperwork, leaving her son waiting in the car. When she returned to the parking lot, both her vehicle and her son had vanished, prompting an immediate police investigation.
Authorities quickly learned that the young boy had climbed into the driver’s seat and driven himself home. The family’s residence is located about a mile away from the school, making it a surprisingly long journey for a 10-year-old behind the wheel.
Surveillance and Witness Accounts
Reviewing the school’s security footage confirmed that the boy drove off alone. Witnesses also reported seeing the car backing out of the parking lot, narrowly missing another vehicle, jumping a curb, and then speeding away. The vehicle was later found safely parked at the family’s home.
When police arrived at the house, the boy’s father was reportedly puzzled, as he was unaware his son had left school or driven home by himself. The mother, who met officers back at the school, was understandably shocked to discover her son had taken the car.
A Child’s Frustration
When questioned by authorities, the child admitted that he had an argument with his mother and decided to drive himself home. While the boy made it home safely, the incident certainly caused a major scare for everyone involved. Officials believe his actions stemmed from frustration rather than any malicious intent.
This unusual event has prompted a review by the school district and police department to understand how the child was able to leave campus and access the vehicle. While no charges have been announced, the incident raises important questions about child safety and vehicle security.
