Verizon Layoffs: 15,000 Jobs Cut in Major Reduction

Big news in the telecom world: Verizon is making massive cuts, planning to eliminate approximately 15,000 jobs in the coming week. This marks the company’s largest reduction in workforce ever, signaling a major shift in strategy.

Significant Job Reductions and Store Changes

Sources close to the matter revealed to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that these layoffs are just part of the story. Verizon also plans to transition about 200 of its retail stores to franchise operations. This means employees at these locations will move from Verizon’s direct payroll.

As of February 2025, Verizon, the leading U.S. telecom provider by subscriber numbers, employed around 100,000 people. These cuts represent a substantial portion of that workforce, aiming to streamline operations and boost efficiency.

Facing Competition and Shifting Strategy

Why the drastic measures? The company is grappling with intense competition in both the wireless and home internet sectors. Verizon has seen a decline in postpaid phone subscribers for three consecutive quarters, with rivals successfully attracting customers away.

In the most recent quarter, Verizon reported a net loss of 7,000 consumer postpaid phone lines, falling short of Wall Street’s expectations. Meanwhile, competitors like AT&T and T-Mobile continue to expand their subscriber bases.

New Leadership, New Direction

Taking the helm in October, new CEO Daniel Schulman is spearheading this aggressive cost-cutting initiative. Schulman, who previously led PayPal and Virgin Mobile USA, has vowed to shed unprofitable legacy businesses and foster a more agile organization.

Verizon is at a critical inflection point. We have a tremendous amount of opportunity to be more efficient, to be scrappier. Cost reductions will be a way of life for us here. — Daniel Schulman, Verizon CEO

Schulman’s vision aims to make Verizon more efficient and competitive. However, analysts from Morgan Stanley caution that executing this strategy in the mature U.S. telecom market will be a challenging and lengthy process.

A Trend of Corporate Job Reductions

Verizon’s layoffs are part of a broader trend across major corporations. Recently, Meta cut 600 jobs from its AI unit, UPS eliminated about 34,000 positions, Amazon is reducing around 14,000 corporate roles, and IBM announced thousands of job cuts as it pivots towards AI.

These widespread workforce adjustments highlight the dynamic nature of the business landscape, driven by factors like technological shifts, increased competition, and the pursuit of greater efficiency and profitability.
