Talk about dedication! Tony Award-winner Cynthia Erivo recently shared the intense experience of her audition for the iconic role of Elphaba in the upcoming film adaptation of “Wicked: For Good.” It turns out, she gave it her all while battling a serious fever!
Leaving It All on the Stage (and Screen)
During a special NBC feature, “Wicked: One Wonderful Night,” Erivo, 38, detailed her lengthy, three-hour audition. She explained that it was primarily a chemistry read, and by the end of the grueling session, she was running a 103-degree fever. “Whatever I had left was in that room,” she recalled, emphasizing the sheer effort she poured into the performance.
This wasn’t the first time she hinted at her unwell state post-audition. Back in November 2024, she mentioned to Jimmy Fallon that she was bedridden for about four days with a fever, even reaching 104 degrees. It’s clear she was committed to nailing the role of the misunderstood witch.
Preparing for the Emerald City
Erivo revealed that this extensive audition was her only one for the film. She also shared that she began training “like a boxer” to mentally prepare for the role. Having already known much of the music from the beloved musical, she felt the songs were “in her DNA” even before being asked to audition.
The star has been busy with a whirlwind press tour for “Wicked: For Good,” the sequel to the 2024 film. She’s been working alongside a star-studded cast including Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, and Jonathan Bailey. Erivo has spoken about the strong bond she’s formed with co-star Ariana Grande, describing an immediate connection and a pact to protect and support each other throughout the filming process.
A Moment of Protection
Erivo’s protective nature was recently highlighted when she stepped in to shield Grande from an overzealous fan in Singapore. This incident underscored the deep friendship and commitment the two actresses share, a promise they made to each other when they were cast.
“Wicked: For Good” is set to enchant audiences when it hits theaters on November 21st. Erivo’s incredible commitment during her audition is just another testament to her passion for bringing Elphaba to life.
