Jesse Jackson Hospitalized for Neurodegenerative Disease

Prayers are being sent for civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson, who has been hospitalized and is currently under observation at a Chicago hospital. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition announced on November 12th that Jackson has been managing a rare neurodegenerative disorder for many years.

Battling Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

The 84-year-old activist has been living with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a condition that was confirmed in April after an initial diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition stated that Jackson has been managing this condition for over a decade.

PSP is a neurodegenerative disease that affects movement, balance, and eye-tracking. Unfortunately, it tends to progress more rapidly than other similar conditions, and currently, there is no cure or treatment that can slow its progression. Most patients develop significant disabilities within three to five years of diagnosis.

Understanding the Symptoms of PSP

The symptoms of PSP can be wide-ranging and significantly impact a person’s ability to function independently. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), common signs include:

  • Unexplained falls due to ‘axial rigidity’.
  • Speech impediments and difficulties with swallowing.
  • Unique eye movement problems, particularly trouble looking up and down.
  • Changes in mood and disposition, such as depression, irritability, or sudden emotional outbursts.
  • Difficulties with judgment, problem-solving, and finding the right words.
  • Forgetfulness and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities.
  • Personality changes, slowed speech, or a mask-like facial expression.

It’s crucial to be aware that some symptoms can be mistaken for signs of aging or simple accidents. However, experiencing multiple indicators warrants attention.

Updates Pending

There is currently no information available regarding the severity of Reverend Jackson’s condition or his expected release from observation. The family has expressed their gratitude for all prayers during this time.
