Remember the intense rap beefs that used to dominate headlines? Ja Rule is looking back at his own long-standing feud with fellow New York rapper 50 Cent, and he’s got some strong opinions about its impact. During a recent appearance on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, Ja Rule argued that their conflict did more harm than good for the New York hip-hop scene.
He drew parallels to the highly publicized Kendrick Lamar and Drake battle, suggesting that such intense rivalries often yield no positive outcomes. “Like, me and 50’s sh*t, that sh*t f*cked up New York Hip-Hop,” Ja Rule stated. “It really did because it separated a lot of n****s in New York.”
Moving Past the Negativity
This perspective has led Ja Rule to distance himself from promoting further negativity between him and 50 Cent. “That’s why I don’t sit here and promote the negativity between me and 50,” he explained. He expressed a wish for 50 Cent’s success, adding, “I wish that Black man luck, man. Go ahead and do you, man. Get your money, man. But do right, do better. Because all you do is f*cking sh*t on other Black people too.”
When asked about offering advice to Drake amidst the ongoing rap battles, Ja Rule questioned why he should only advise one artist. He pointed out Drake’s immense success, noting, “Drake don’t need no advice. Drake is rich, he got a big ass plane… That n***a chilling, man.”
A Bold Claim: ‘Better Rapper’
The conversation also touched on the age-old debate of who is the superior rapper. Ja Rule confidently declared himself the “better rapper” than 50 Cent, though he acknowledged this might be an “unpopular opinion.” He elaborated on his reasoning, stating, “I feel like I was the better rapper. I felt like I made the better records. I feel like my records aged better, still.”
This reflection comes years after their infamous beef, which significantly shaped the narrative of New York hip-hop in the early 2000s. While the animosity may have cooled, its impact on the genre is still a topic of discussion.
