The NFL community is in mourning following the devastating loss of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland. The promising young player, just 24 years old, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on November 6th, sending shockwaves through the league and beyond.
A Life Cut Short Amidst Struggles
Reports indicate that Kneeland’s death followed a police chase in Dallas. However, his loved ones believe that his struggles with mental health played a significant role in his tragic end. This was reportedly compounded by the loss of his mother just two months prior to the NFL draft last year.
Heartbreakingly, it’s reported that Kneeland sent text messages to his family and girlfriend saying goodbye shortly before taking his own life. His girlfriend, Catalina, was reportedly in contact with 9-1-1 dispatchers, expressing grave concerns for his safety due to his armed status and history of mental illness, stating, ‘He will end it all.’
A Rising Star’s Journey
Kneeland’s passing comes just days after he achieved a significant career milestone, recording his first touchdown during the Cowboys’ Monday Night Football game against the Arizona Cardinals on November 3rd. This achievement, which should have been a moment of celebration, now serves as a poignant reminder of the life lost too soon.
Drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 draft, Kneeland had spoken openly about the impact of his mother’s passing. In an interview with the Dallas Morning News, he shared, “It was definitely tough… She helped me a lot in my younger years getting into football. I always had the dream. I always told her, ‘I’m going to the NFL’ and I made it.”
A Community’s Grief
The Dallas Cowboys organization expressed their profound sadness on Instagram, calling Kneeland a “beloved teammate and member of our organization.” Their thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend, Catalina, and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
This tragedy highlights the critical importance of mental health awareness and support. As Keyshia Ka’Oir recently shared regarding her husband Gucci Mane’s struggles with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, the narrative around mental health needs to be one of understanding and support, not ridicule. “We need to do better as a community! Everything is not a joke!” she emphasized.

The loss of Marshawn Kneeland is a somber reminder that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of their public profile or success. Our deepest condolences go out to the Kneeland family and all who knew and loved him.
