Hold onto your hats, #Socialites! The Trump administration is taking a legal detour, asking for an emergency pause on a judge’s order that could significantly impact grocery access for 42 million Americans. This comes as the federal government remains shut down, leaving vital programs like SNAP in the crossfire.
The Courtroom Battle Over Food Benefits
U.S. District Judge Jack McConnell had ordered the administration to disburse full SNAP benefits for November by Friday. However, instead of complying, the administration has appealed to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals, seeking to block the ruling. Their proposal is to pay only 65% of the owed amount, using contingency funds.
Judge McConnell rejected this partial payment plan, insisting the administration tap into Section 32 funds, typically used for farm products, to ensure recipients receive their full entitlement. He sharply criticized the government’s actions, stating, ‘While the President of the United States professes a commitment to helping those it serves, the government’s actions tell a different story.’
SNAP Caught in Government Shutdown
The ongoing federal shutdown, which began on October 1st due to congressional disagreements over a funding bill, has put programs like SNAP in a precarious position. Historically, previous administrations have ensured SNAP payments continued during shutdowns. However, Trump officials warned of a complete halt to payments this month, citing a lack of appropriated funds.
This isn’t the first judicial intervention. Judge McConnell had previously ordered partial payments from contingency funds on October 31st and urged the administration to find more money. Their offer increased from 50% on Monday to 65% by Wednesday, but the judge pushed for the full amount.
Millions Waiting for a Decision
As of Friday morning, the appeals court has given plaintiffs until noon Eastern to respond to the government’s emergency motion. Meanwhile, millions of low-income families are left in limbo, anxiously awaiting the outcome that will determine whether they can afford their next grocery trip or if they’ll face skipped meals due to Washington’s gridlock.
