The Dallas Cowboys organization is mourning the loss of a beloved teammate. Second-year defensive player Marshawn Kneeland was found dead on Thursday, November 6th, following a police chase in Frisco, Texas. The team confirmed the tragic news, stating it was from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Kneeland, just 24 years old, had recently scored his first NFL touchdown on November 3rd, recovering a blocked punt in the Cowboys’ game against the Arizona Cardinals. His potential was evident, having been selected by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan University. Despite facing injuries that caused him to miss games in both his rookie and current seasons, Kneeland made a notable impact on the field.
This season, he recorded 15 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, and six quarterback hurries. In his rookie year, he tallied 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, 13 quarterback pressures, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery. His presence was a valued part of the Cowboys’ defense.
Details of the Incident
According to the Frisco Police Department, officers responded to a call from the Texas Department of Public Safety requesting assistance in locating a vehicle. The vehicle reportedly evaded DPS troopers around 10:39 p.m. CT on November 5th, eventually crashing on the southbound Dallas Parkway. Police reports indicate that Kneeland fled the scene on foot as officers, aided by K-9 and drone units, began their search.
Tragically, Kneeland was found approximately three hours later. During the search, officers received information that the defensive end had expressed suicidal ideations, adding a heartbreaking dimension to the unfolding events.
