Many of us grew up with Raven-Symoné, watching her charm us on “The Cosby Show,” “That’s So Raven,” and in “The Cheetah Girls.” With a face that seemed to be everywhere, it felt like she was destined to be the next big “IT girl.” Her career even branched out into music, a path many young stars take.
The Real Reason Behind Stepping Away from Music
But what happened to Raven’s music career? In a recent chat on the “Sorry We’re Cyrus” podcast, the actress opened up about why she put her musical aspirations on hold, despite her genuine love for it. It turns out, it was all about setting crucial boundaries.
Raven-Symoné explained that the music industry at the time had a certain expectation: “the more naked you are on stage the better it is.” She firmly stated, “I’m not going to do that.” This meant saying no to mandatory revealing outfits, like bathing suits, which she wasn’t comfortable with.
Navigating Industry Pressures and Body Shaming
The pressure didn’t stop there. Raven-Symoné recounted a particularly hurtful comment made to her mother by someone at her record label: “She’s so fat. How can she do so long on stage?” This kind of body-shaming, coupled with the pressure to conform to certain visual standards, led to her decision to step away from that particular music path.
She described her time with Hollywood Records as “a mess.” While she didn’t have the massive backing “machine” that some other Disney stars enjoyed for their music careers, this lack of intense industry pressure also gave her more freedom, like with her tour schedules. She released two studio albums, “This Is My Time” and a self-titled project, along with several soundtracks during her music career.
Lessons Learned: Boundaries and Therapy
Looking back, Raven-Symoné sees her journey as both a blessing and a curse. Her last album was released in 2020, and she now emphasizes that the secret to surviving in Hollywood is setting firm boundaries and prioritizing mental health through therapy. “I have a lot of masks up, and I go to a lot of therapy, and I stay to myself,” she shared.
Her advice is clear: “Hollywood, if you get too into it, you start losing yourself. You have to do the work and leave.” It’s a powerful reminder that staying true to yourself is paramount, even amidst the glitz and glamour of the entertainment world.
