Charles Oakley Ordered to Pay $642K to MSG

In a major development in the ongoing legal dispute between Charles Oakley and Madison Square Garden (MSG), a judge has ordered the former NBA star to pay over $642,000. This hefty sum is a sanction related to the loss of crucial text messages that were relevant to his lawsuit stemming from a 2017 game ejection.

The Sanction and the Missing Texts

The order, issued on October 31st, comes after Oakley failed to produce text messages sent or received between February 2017 and February 2022. MSG’s attorneys had initially sought over $1.5 million in fees, but U.S. Magistrate Judge Robyn Tarnofsky reduced the amount. The judge’s ruling cited bad faith in the explanation for the lost messages, noting that Oakley had previously upgraded his phone without losing texts.

Oakley, a beloved 19-year NBA veteran and former power forward for the New York Knicks, has been embroiled in a long-standing feud with MSG owner James Dolan. The legal battle began after Oakley’s controversial ejection from a Knicks game in 2017. His amended complaint from April 2024 includes allegations of assault and battery against MSG and its affiliates, who deny any wrongdoing.

Oakley’s Response and Appeal Plans

Following the recent ruling, Oakley faces the choice of paying the fees or pursuing an appeal. His attorney, Valdi Licul, expressed disagreement with the ruling, stating, ‘We disagree that MSG is entitled to any recovery and will promptly seek to appeal.’ The legal fight is far from over.

A Long-Standing Feud

The conflict between Oakley and Dolan dates back years, with Oakley being a vocal critic of Dolan’s management of the Knicks. His ejection from the game in 2017, which was captured on video and widely publicized, became a flashpoint in their contentious relationship. This latest court order adds another chapter to their ongoing legal saga.
