NY Official Charged in Shooting of Lost DoorDash Driver

A shocking incident in Chester, New York, has led to the arrest of a local official and his wife. John Reilly III, the highway superintendent for the town of Chester, is accused of shooting a DoorDash driver who had simply gotten lost while trying to find an address.

A Delivery Gone Terribly Wrong

The victim, Alpha Barry, was reportedly making a delivery when his phone died, leaving him unable to navigate. He approached several homes seeking directions, and when he knocked on Reilly’s door, he was initially told to leave. However, instead of offering help, Reilly allegedly went inside, retrieved a handgun, and fired a shot into his lawn.

Tragically, the violence didn’t stop there. Reilly then allegedly turned the gun on Barry’s vehicle and fired two more rounds, with one striking Barry in the lower back. The severity of the injury required Barry to undergo major surgery, including the removal of 25 inches of damaged intestines.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Following his arrest, Reilly faces serious charges, including second-degree attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors sought to increase his bail from $250,000 to $500,000, citing him as a flight risk. While the judge denied this request, Reilly was required to forfeit his passport and will wear an ankle monitor for 30 days.

District Attorney David Hoovler highlighted that Reilly possessed a Federal Firearm License for selling guns but lacked a permit for possessing them in New York State. Hoovler condemned the “unprovoked violence” and the “awful consequences” of illegal firearm use, vowing that the community would not tolerate the victimization of vulnerable individuals.

Wife Also Charged in Cover-Up Attempt

Adding another disturbing layer to the case, Reilly’s wife was also arrested. She faces charges of hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence for allegedly deleting 17 videos from the home’s doorbell surveillance camera system, seemingly in an attempt to conceal the events.
