Charlamagne Predicts Spotify Lawsuit Sparks Federal Probe

The music industry is buzzing with news of a major class-action lawsuit filed against Spotify, accusing the streaming giant of knowingly allowing billions of fraudulent streams. Now, media personality Charlamagne Tha God is weighing in, predicting that this legal battle could ignite a sweeping federal investigation.

The Lawsuit’s Core Allegations

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the lawsuit claims that Spotify permits artists, including Drake, to profit from illegal streaming practices. The plaintiffs allege that “billions of fraudulent streams are generated from fake, illegitimate, and/or illegal methods” each month, causing substantial financial harm to legitimate artists and rightsholders.

Spearheaded by rapper RBX, the suit specifically targets Spotify’s “streamshare” model. This system calculates royalties based on a percentage of total streams, which the plaintiffs argue is inherently flawed and unfair, especially to smaller artists who are disadvantaged by artificially inflated numbers.

Spotify’s Response and Charlamagne’s Prediction

In response, a Spotify spokesperson stated, “We cannot comment on pending litigation. However, Spotify in no way benefits from the industry-wide challenge of artificial streaming.” The company claims to invest heavily in systems to combat fake streams and protect artist payouts.

Charlamagne Tha God, however, is not convinced that this will be the end of the matter. Discussing the lawsuit on The Breakfast Club, he speculated that the case could escalate into a major federal probe. He pointed to specific examples, like the alleged 250,000 fake streams for Drake’s song “No Face” originating from Turkey, and questioned if this ties into Spotify’s previous legal issues in that country.

A Potential ‘Federal Freak-Off’

Charlamagne predicts this entire situation will become “the next federal freak-off,” suggesting a significant government intervention. He also anticipates that many artists who have paid bot farms to inflate their numbers will be implicated.
