Viral ‘Brick Lady’ Sentenced for GoFundMe Scam

Remember the woman who went viral claiming she was attacked with a brick in Houston? Well, the story took a dramatic turn. Roda Osman, who captivated the internet with her tale of a violent assault, has now been convicted of theft.

From Sympathy to Sentencing

Back in September 2023, Osman’s story exploded online. She posted a video describing how a stranger allegedly hit her with a brick after she refused to give him her phone number. The narrative garnered significant public sympathy, leading to a GoFundMe campaign that astonishingly raised over $42,000.

However, the narrative began to unravel when police investigated. Reviewing surveillance footage, investigators found that the events didn’t quite match Osman’s dramatic account. The video reportedly showed an altercation where Osman herself initiated physical contact before the man struck her back, seemingly with a water bottle, not a brick.

The Verdict: Theft by Deception

Based on the evidence, authorities concluded that Osman’s GoFundMe campaign was built on a false premise. Prosecutors argued that she deliberately deceived thousands of people who genuinely believed they were helping a victim of assault. The jury ultimately agreed with this assessment.

On Wednesday, a Harris County jury found Roda Osman guilty of theft. She was subsequently sentenced to 10 years of probation. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of exploiting public trust and generosity for personal gain.
