Think date nights have to be elaborate dinners or blockbuster movies? Well, Michelle Obama is here to tell you that sometimes, the best nights are the simplest ones. The former First Lady recently shared that her date nights with former President Barack Obama are, in her words, “pretty basic.”
Trading Fancy for Familiar
During a chat with People, Michelle revealed that she and Barack have moved past the traditional dinner-and-a-movie routine. In fact, she joked that she’d likely fall asleep if they tried to watch a movie together these days! “So it’s like, ‘Let’s pick one.’ And I pick dinner because at least we’re together, and I’m not just sleeping on his shoulder in the movie,” she explained.
Instead of hitting the town, the Obamas prefer a more low-key, at-home vibe. After 32 years of marriage (and yes, she playfully admitted to forgetting the exact number!), they’ve found comfort in keeping their special nights simple and intimate. It seems they’re more of a chill-at-home kind of couple, and honestly, who can blame them?
The Power of Conversation
What makes their “basic” date nights truly special is the focus on conversation. Since they often spend their days together, especially when not traveling, they’ve developed a unique approach to their one-on-one time. Michelle shared that they sometimes intentionally don’t talk much throughout the day.
“We don’t talk for the whole day, because we’re in the house together all day, right?” she detailed. “So, when we are going to have a really special night, it’s like, ‘Don’t talk to me. Save it for dinner.’” This way, they ensure their date nights are filled with meaningful dialogue and connection.
Keeping the Spark Alive
Michelle Obama’s approach to romance extends beyond just date nights. Her upcoming book, “The Look,” delves into her lifelong relationship with fashion and beauty, and an excerpt revealed how she used formal events to maintain intimacy with Barack. She described how getting dressed up for him, keeping her outfit a surprise, and sharing those quiet moments before facing the press was a way to “keep the spark going.”
You’re getting all dolled up for your man… That’s the romance, those little moments in this crazy world, where we could look at each other and go, ‘You’re cute.’ — Michelle Obama
It’s a beautiful reminder that even amidst a busy public life, prioritizing simple, intentional moments together is key to a lasting connection. Michelle’s new podcast, “IMO: The Look,” is also set to launch soon, further exploring her style and life.
