It looks like a promised collaboration between hip-hop heavyweights Cam’ron and J. Cole has led to a legal battle. Cam’ron has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the North Carolina rapper, accusing him of failing to uphold his end of a deal that involved a guest verse or an appearance on Cam’ron’s podcast.
The Alleged Agreement Breakdown
According to Billboard, the dispute stems from the song “Ready ’24,” which appeared on Cam’ron’s 2024 mixtape, “Might Delete Later.” Cam’ron claims that he and J. Cole agreed that Cole would contribute a guest verse to a Cam’ron project or appear on his popular podcast, “It Is What It Is,” in exchange for Cam’ron’s contribution to “Ready ’24.”
Court documents reveal that the two artists recorded the song together in June 2022. Cam’ron states he presented Cole with already recorded tracks in September, but Cole insisted they record a new song together. However, this collaboration never materialized. When Cam’ron followed up in July 2023 about a podcast appearance, he alleges Cole agreed to record “at a later date” but never followed through, citing busyness.
Seeking Compensation and Royalties
Cam’ron asserts that he has never received any compensation for his contribution to “Ready ’24.” The lawsuit, which names Universal Music Group (UMG) as a defendant alongside Cole, is seeking royalties and profits totaling approximately $500,000. This legal action highlights the complexities and potential pitfalls of informal agreements within the music industry.
This situation adds another layer to the ongoing narratives surrounding both artists. Cam’ron has also been working on a memoir with Simon & Schuster, reportedly securing a $750,000 advance for the project, which will detail his experiences in the music and entertainment industry.
