Paramount Cuts Nearly 1,000 Jobs Post-Merger

It’s a tough time in the media and entertainment world. Paramount Global has just initiated a significant round of layoffs, impacting nearly 1,000 employees across various key divisions like CBS Entertainment, MTV, and BET. This news comes hot on the heels of the company’s recent merger with Skydance Media, which officially wrapped up in August.

The Scale of the Layoffs

This initial wave of cuts, which began on October 29th, is just the beginning. Reports suggest that an additional 1,000 to 2,000 employees could be let go in the coming months. This restructuring is being driven by new CEO David Ellison, who is aiming to streamline operations following the Skydance integration.

The impact is being felt by many, including seasoned television executives. Several prominent figures are among those affected, such as Teri Fleming (Head of Marketing for Paramount Global Content Distribution), Pamela Soper and Amanda Palley (Senior VPs of Current Programming at CBS Entertainment), and Rose Catherine Pinkney (Senior VP of Scripted Programming and Development at BET), among others.

Why the Cuts? A Strategic Realignment

In a memo to staff, CEO David Ellison explained that these layoffs are crucial for aligning the company’s structure with its “evolving priorities.” He highlighted that roles no longer aligned with the company’s direction are being phased out, and redundancies created by the merger are being addressed. Ellison described the process as difficult but essential for Paramount’s long-term success.

These workforce reductions represent the first major strategic move under Ellison’s leadership since the Skydance merger. It’s worth noting that Paramount had already seen several rounds of layoffs in areas like communications, advertising, and television studios prior to this. At the end of 2024, the company had a global workforce of about 18,600 full-time employees, plus 3,500 project-based workers.

Return-to-Office and Severance

Adding another layer to these changes, Paramount plans to implement a phased return-to-office schedule starting in January 2026. For employees who are unable or unwilling to return to a five-day in-person work week, the company will be offering severance packages. This move signals a significant shift in how Paramount expects its employees to work moving forward.
