A recent incident involving ‘Love Island’ stars Louis Russell and Huda Mustafa has sparked significant backlash and prompted apologies after they were seen laughing during a livestream when a racial slur was directed at fellow castmate Olandria Carthen. The situation has drawn sharp criticism, with Carthen’s friend and ‘Love Island’ season 7 co-star, Chelley Bissainthe, calling the event ‘disappointing.’
The Incident Unfolds on Livestream
The controversy began when Russell and Mustafa were on a livestream and received a call. During the call, which they described as a prank, a racial slur was allegedly uttered, seemingly aimed at Olandria Carthen. Immediately after hearing the offensive language, Russell and Mustafa ended the call and were observed laughing. They later claimed their laughter was a reaction to the awkwardness of the situation, not an endorsement of the slur.
Mustafa took to her Instagram Story to address the backlash, stating that she and Russell did not clearly hear the full context of the call, only the slur itself, which prompted them to hang up. She emphasized that she does not condone racism and found the situation awkward and inappropriate, especially since it sounded like a child making the call. Russell initially defended Mustafa, condemning the online criticism and asserting their non-racist stance, noting his own Black identity and their relationship.
Olandria Carthen’s Powerful Response
Olandria Carthen responded to the incident with a strong statement condemning racism and emphasizing the generational pain associated with such language. She rejected any attempts to defend, laugh at, or excuse the behavior, stating that such actions perpetuate harmful cycles. Carthen declared her commitment to uplifting her community and called for genuine accountability.
She expressed anticipation for superficial apologies but aimed to transform the moment into something actionable. Carthen encouraged those involved and their followers to demonstrate a commitment to anti-racism by donating to organizations like the UNCF, NAACP, and Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and shared donation links for these causes.
Formal Apologies and Accountability
Following Carthen’s response, Louis Russell issued a more formal apology to ‘all those affected,’ expressing his sincerest regrets. He reiterated that he and Mustafa were caught off guard and that his reaction was a ‘flustered response to a very unnerving situation,’ which he acknowledged could be misinterpreted. As a Black man, he stated he has a deep empathy for battling racism and that the incident does not reflect his or Mustafa’s values.
Huda Mustafa also offered a more thorough apology directly to Olandria Carthen. She acknowledged her immediate reaction was one of nervousness and discomfort, not amusement, and that it was inappropriate. Mustafa stressed that she does not condone such language and encouraged the responsible individual to reflect on their actions. Following Carthen’s lead, Mustafa also shared donation links to organizations supporting racial equity, including the NAACP, The Loveland Foundation, and BEAM.
Chelley Bissainthe’s Disappointment
Chelley Bissainthe shared her perspective, calling the incident ‘disappointing to say the least.’ She emphasized that racism is not a prank or entertainment and should never be laughed at. As a Black woman, Bissainthe found it painful to see such disrespect and ignorance normalized through silence or humor instead of accountability. She urged everyone to speak up against hate speech, stating that there is ‘nothing awkward about racism—it’s disgusting and disheartening.’
Bissainthe concluded by encouraging people to use their voices and stand up for what is right, regardless of the circumstances. The collective responses highlight the ongoing need for awareness, accountability, and genuine commitment to combating racism in all its forms.
