Diddy Seeks Speedy Appeal to Reduce Sentence

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team is taking swift action following his 50-month prison sentence. They have filed a request with a federal appeals court to expedite the appeal process, aiming to potentially reduce his time behind bars before he even completes it.

The Urgency of an Expedited Appeal

Combs’ lawyers argue that under the standard timeline for appeals, he could finish serving his sentence before the appeal is even heard. This would render the appeal moot. “An expedited briefing and argument schedule is critical to ensure that Mr. Combs’s appeal of his sentence does not become moot while the appeal is pending,” stated defense attorney Alexandra Shapiro in the filing.

Combs has already served approximately 14 months of his sentence. Shapiro noted that the exact duration he will serve is uncertain, given the possibility of sentence reductions. The filing proposes an accelerated schedule to ensure the court’s consideration of the appeal is meaningful.

Challenging the Conviction and Sentencing

The appeal will specifically challenge the two prostitution-related convictions under the Mann Act, for which Combs was sentenced. His legal team plans to argue that prosecutors unfairly applied this law, which has a controversial history, to prosecute him for consensual sexual encounters.

Furthermore, Combs’ lawyers intend to contest both his conviction and sentencing on these charges. They contend that the counts should not apply, as Combs allegedly had no financial motive for transporting male escorts, claiming his actions were solely for observation with his girlfriends. “Mr. Combs expects to challenge both his conviction and sentence in his appeal,” the filing states.

The Road Ahead

The filing comes just days after the Bureau of Prisons indicated a potential release date of May 8, 2028, from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. However, this date is subject to change. The legal team’s push for an expedited appeal underscores their commitment to securing the best possible outcome for Combs.
