Darius McCrary Extradited to Michigan on Felony Warrant

It’s been a tumultuous time for actor Darius McCrary, best known for his role as Eddie Winslow on ‘Family Matters.’ After nearly a month in a San Diego jail, McCrary has been released and promptly extradited to Michigan to face a felony warrant. This latest development stems from charges related to unpaid child support.

Arrest and Extradition Details

McCrary was initially arrested on October 5th near the U.S.-Mexico border. He spent close to a month in jail while awaiting his transfer to Michigan authorities. A judge had previously denied him bail, citing concerns that he might be a flight risk. This isn’t the first time McCrary has faced charges for the same issue; he was previously detained in 2015 and again in 2023, when he was extradited from Los Angeles to Michigan.

Reports on why McCrary was traveling near the border have been conflicting. Prosecutors initially suggested his agent stated he was in Tijuana for real estate purposes when he was detained by Border Patrol while re-entering the U.S. However, McCrary’s public defender, appointed after he initially sought to represent himself, claimed he was in Mexico to assist a charity that builds homes for the unhoused.

Flight Risk and Legal Proceedings

Prosecutors argued that McCrary posed a flight risk, especially given his history of arrests for the same charges. Following a court appearance on October 15th, where McCrary reportedly appeared confused and chose to represent himself, the judge appointed him a public defender. The judge noted that McCrary “is unable to understand and appreciate the legalities of these proceedings.”

McCrary’s representative, Ann Barlow, has maintained that the actor is not a flight risk and has no ties to Tijuana. She explained that his crossing into Mexico was accidental, a “mix-up about where to meet his partner for the Esperanza program,” where he volunteered. Despite these claims, the legal system is moving forward with the charges in Michigan.
