During the Navy’s 250th anniversary celebration in Norfolk, Virginia, there were reportedly significant pressures from the White House to make the event more dramatic. Sources suggest that former President Donald Trump desired a display featuring actual explosions, rather than the planned demonstration using inert bombs.
Push for Real Firepower
According to individuals involved in the planning, the White House urged the Navy to replace dummy bombs with live 2,000-pound munitions for the milestone event. One planner reportedly told the Associated Press that Trump “needed to see explosions,” pushing back against the Navy’s initial plan for a demonstration that would only create water splashes.
While military protocols typically favor inert bombs for safety and cost-effectiveness, the White House allegedly pushed for the use of real firepower. A third source confirmed that the plan for using dummy bombs was indeed changed, although it remains unclear who made the final decision.
White House Response and Safety Concerns
The White House has denied any last-minute changes to the plan. Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated, “Organizers always planned to use live munitions, as is typical in training exercises.” This assertion comes despite reports suggesting a shift from the original plan.
The event on October 5th featured Navy destroyers launching missiles, jets firing real bombs, and helicopters firing rockets as part of the “Titans of the Sea Presidential Review.” Trump and First Lady Melania observed the display from the USS George H.W. Bush. This reported shift to live ordnance necessitated revised safety plans, especially given that ships were firing live ammunition at sea. This incident follows another controversial live-fire demonstration for the Marine Corps’ anniversary, which reportedly sent shrapnel near a busy freeway.
