Olandria Carthen Responds to Racial Slur Incident

Following a viral clip that sparked significant backlash, ‘Love Island USA’ star Olandria Carthen has broken her silence on the incident where fellow contestants Huda Mustafa and Louis Russell appeared to laugh at a racial slur directed at her during an Instagram Live session. The video left many viewers disgusted and demanding accountability from the couple.

The Incident and Initial Reactions

The controversial moment occurred during a livestream when an anonymous caller, whose voice sounded like a child’s, uttered a racial slur about Carthen. Both Mustafa and Russell were seen laughing briefly before abruptly ending the call. This reaction quickly ignited outrage on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with users labeling the moment “gross,” “tone-deaf,” and “embarrassing.”

In the aftermath, Huda Mustafa took to Instagram to defend herself, claiming the clip was being used as “clickbait.” She stated that she and Louis did not clearly hear what was said, only the slur itself, and that they hung up immediately. Mustafa insisted she does not condone racism and that their laughter was due to the awkwardness and inappropriateness of the situation, not amusement.

Louis Russell Defends Huda

Louis Russell also weighed in, defending Mustafa and accusing critics of twisting the narrative. He reminded followers that he is Black and suggested that the internet was unfairly targeting Huda. Russell described the situation as “taken out of context” and insisted their reaction stemmed from discomfort, not disrespect. However, these explanations did little to quell the public’s criticism, with many urging the couple to “own the optics.”

Carthen Calls for Accountability and Action

Olandria Carthen responded with a powerful statement, making it clear she does not condone racism in any form. “Words like that carry generations of pain, and pretending otherwise only keeps the cycle going,” she wrote. “Defending it, laughing about it, or making excuses is even worse.”

Carthen emphasized her commitment to uplifting her community and called for “real accountability and awareness.” She expressed a desire for actionable change beyond superficial apologies, encouraging those involved and their followers to support anti-racism organizations like the UNCF, NAACP, and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. She pledged to share donation links to support HBCUs and educational resources for Black students.
