Get ready to roll into Memphis with ‘G.R.I.T.S.’ (Girls Raised in the South), a captivating new series premiering October 30th exclusively on ALLBLK. This eight-episode series dives deep into the lives of three ambitious young women navigating love, loss, and their dreams, all while finding freedom and connection on the skating rink. It’s a vibrant blend of Southern charm, electrifying skating sequences, and the undeniable power of sisterhood.

A Love Letter to Memphis and Friendship

Created and executive produced by Deji LaRay and Thomas Q. Jones, ‘G.R.I.T.S.’ is described as a heartfelt ‘love letter to friendship, self-discovery, and the grit it takes to grow up and glow up in Memphis.’ The series introduces us to Keisha (Jasmine Sargent), Ty (Ashanti Harris), and Francis (Aja “Slimeroni” Canyon), a trio who must learn to swerve and curve adversity as life throws its inevitable challenges their way. LaRay shared that Memphis itself is a character in the show, chosen for its unique soul, vibrant energy, and the challenges that fuel conflict and growth for the characters. He emphasized the importance of showcasing Memphis’s enduring identity and incorporating the rich culture of skating rinks, a world he grew up in.

Thomas Q. Jones highlighted the meticulous casting process, noting the instant chemistry between the lead actresses. Jasmine Sargent was envisioned for the role of Keisha from the show’s inception, embodying the ‘down to earth, around the way girl’ energy. Ashanti Harris perfectly captured the vulnerability and genuine spirit of Ty, who faces numerous obstacles. Rapper Slimeroni, a Memphis native, impressed with her raw, honest audition tape, securing the role of Francis and bringing authentic local flavor to the series.

Sisterhood, Dreams, and Skating Competitions

At the core of ‘G.R.I.T.S.’ is a high-stakes skating competition offering life-changing prize money, providing the trio a potential escape from their circumstances. However, the series delves deeper, focusing on the profound power of sisterhood and the unbreakable bonds that sustain them. Ashanti Harris hopes her character Ty’s journey inspires single mothers to continue pursuing their dreams, acknowledging the difficulties but emphasizing the possibility. Jasmine Sargent connected deeply with Keisha’s story of loss, drawing from her own experiences to portray the character’s vulnerability.

For Memphis native Slimeroni, playing Francis was a chance to showcase her city’s warmth and joy, moving beyond the negative stereotypes often associated with it. She infused the character with authentic Memphis slang and rhythm, making the series feel incredibly genuine. Her co-stars praised her contribution, along with a dialect coach, for enhancing the show’s authenticity.

Authenticity On and Off the Rink

The show’s commitment to authenticity extends to its skating scenes, expertly choreographed by Atlanta skaters Kamille Gilmore and Icey Coffeey. Jones emphasized that skating is more than just movement; it’s culture, rhythm, style, and community, elements they aimed to capture in every frame. The production also features notable appearances from Memphis rap legends Eightball & MJG, and actress Elise Neal, who brought their unique talents to the series. LaRay and Jones themselves make cameos, adding to the show’s rich tapestry.

Executive producers LaRay and Jones, along with Martha Sanchez and the ALLBLK team, have crafted a series about perseverance, the importance of relationships, and finding joy amidst challenges. ‘G.R.I.T.S.’ promises to transport viewers to the heart of Southern life, capturing the magic of music, front porch conversations, and community gatherings. As Jones put it, ‘It’s one of the best shows we’ve ever created,’ with chemistry and energy that feel undeniably real.
