She explained that she initially hesitated to engage out of respect for Black women but felt compelled to speak out because Ali seemed to be “hating on the youth.”

She claims Ali presented herself as a mentor but allegedly changed her tune as Shields gained popularity. Shields believes Ali advised her to stay an amateur, perhaps due to the limited opportunities and pay for women in boxing at the time.

This advice clearly didn’t sit well with Shields, who went on to become the first woman to earn $1 million in the sport.
