A bit of controversy stirred up during Hampton University’s recent Homecoming weekend when a member of the BLEXIT movement, Craig Long, claimed the university shut down his event, alleging they were “silenced” due to their political views. However, Hampton University has since clarified that the group never had official approval for their appearance.
The BLEXIT Claim vs. University Policy
Craig Long took to Instagram to describe an “electric” conversation he had with students as part of BLEXIT’s “Educate to Liberate Tour.” He alleged that the university abruptly ended the event, claiming it was due to not following “proper channels.” Long interpreted this as an act of silencing the group because of their conservative viewpoints.
Hampton University, however, responded with an official statement on social media, emphasizing that the BLEXIT visit was neither an official nor an approved Homecoming event. According to the university, representatives from the organization attempted to access campus without the necessary authorization or completing the required vendor application process for Homecoming activities.
Safety, Procedure, and Fairness
The university stressed that the decision was not about suppressing speech but about maintaining safety, adhering to procedure, and ensuring fairness. Hampton explained that they received 36 vendor applications for Homecoming, with 18 being approved. BLEXIT’s application was not among those that met the necessary requirements.
As a private institution, Hampton University stated its need to know who is on campus and why, ensuring all participants are properly credentialed. This is particularly crucial during large events like Homecoming, which can attract around 15,000 people. Unauthorized individuals attempting to enter campus during such times are escorted off the property to protect students, staff, and guests.
Lack of Evidence and Next Steps
Notably, no video footage of the alleged shutdown has surfaced online. Long has indicated that BLEXIT is expected to release their own video of the exchange. The university’s stance highlights the importance of following established protocols for events, especially during high-traffic periods like Homecoming, to ensure a safe and organized experience for everyone involved.
