Erykah Badu on ‘Ms. Jackson’: Mom Thinks It’s About Her!

Ever wondered if Outkast’s iconic track ‘Ms. Jackson’ was inspired by Erykah Badu herself? Well, the neo-soul queen recently weighed in, and her answer comes with a hilarious twist! While chatting on “Popcast,” Badu playfully suggested that the song might actually be about her mother, Kolleen Gipson.

A Mother’s Claim to Fame?

When asked about being a muse, Badu clarified, “I don’t think ‘Ms. Jackson’ was actually about me. I don’t think so, but people say it.” But she didn’t stop there. With a laugh, she added, “Well, she thinks it was about her. She’s got the bumper sticker and the airbrush T-shirt.” Talk about a proud mom!

For those who might not know, Erykah Badu and André 3000, formerly of Outkast, share a son, Seven Sirius Benjamin, born in 1997. Though they parted ways two years later, their creative collaboration continued on tracks like ‘Humble Mumble’ and ‘Hello,’ showcasing their enduring artistic connection.

Badu’s Admiration for André 3000

Reflecting on her own influence, Badu shared that she believes the fathers of her children were already on a certain path, which is why they “sympathetically vibrated together.” She also expressed immense admiration for André 3000’s artistry, calling herself one of his biggest fans outside of their family connection. “Super inspiring,” she noted during a recent “Drink Champs” appearance.

Even though Badu herself doubts she was the direct inspiration for ‘Ms. Jackson,’ her lighthearted comments and deep respect for André 3000’s talent continue to highlight her significant impact on hip-hop and neo-soul culture. It’s a fun reminder of the legendary connections within music history!
