Sister Nancy Praises Jay-Z’s ‘Bam Bam’ Sample

When a song becomes a timeless classic, it’s bound to be sampled by countless artists. But for the original creator, some renditions stand out more than others. Dancehall legend Sister Nancy, the voice behind the iconic track ‘Bam Bam,’ recently shared why Jay-Z’s interpretation of her song is her absolute favorite.

More Than Just a Sample: Respect and Recognition

Sister Nancy’s 1982 hit ‘Bam Bam’ has been sampled over 155 times, appearing in tracks by artists like Lauryn Hill, Janelle Monáe, and Chris Brown. Yet, when asked about her preferred version, she points directly to Jay-Z’s 2002 track ‘Bam’ featuring Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley. The reason? Jay-Z didn’t just take the music; he included Sister Nancy herself.

“The reality of him taking me with him to shoot the video in Jamaica was amazing,” Sister Nancy explained in an interview with Billboard. “I really appreciated that. Everybody has sampled the song, but he chose to take me with him. Jay-Z is my No. 1. He did the right thing.”

Everybody else was cheap; they didn’t even think about me. At the time, I had just left my accounting job at the bank, so it meant a lot. — Sister Nancy

The Fight for Royalties

While Jay-Z’s gesture was particularly meaningful, Sister Nancy’s journey with ‘Bam Bam’ has also involved a significant legal battle for unpaid royalties. After migrating to the U.S. in 1996, she first heard her song in Hype Williams’ 1998 film ‘Belly.’ However, it wasn’t until years later, after hearing it in a Reebok commercial, that she decided to fight for her rights.

In 2014, Sister Nancy took legal action to reclaim the compensation she was owed for years of unauthorized sampling. She described the experience of fighting for her music, stating, “And nobody complained, because they knew I deserved it. They basically just gave me what I was owed.” This victory highlights the importance of artists securing their intellectual property.

A Documentary and a Legacy

Sister Nancy, now 63, is being celebrated not only for her groundbreaking hit but also for her resilience. A new documentary, ‘Bam Bam: The Story of Sister Nancy,’ is set to arrive later this year, chronicling the ups and downs of her career and her landmark legal win. It’s a testament to her enduring impact on music.

The documentary promises to take fans on a journey through the life of Jamaica’s first female dancehall DJ, offering insights into the creation of ‘Bam Bam’ and the challenges she overcame. It’s a story of talent, perseverance, and the recognition of artistic legacy.
