24 City Health Chiefs Challenge Feds on Vaccines

With measles outbreaks on the rise and public trust in federal health agencies wavering, a powerful group of health leaders is taking a stand. The Big Cities Health Coalition, representing public health officials from two dozen major U.S. cities, has issued a strong call to action: “Get vaccinated!”

Challenging Federal Misinformation

In a joint letter, these health chiefs expressed deep concern over what they describe as “repeated false claims about vaccines from too many federal officials.” Their criticism comes in the wake of controversial statements about vaccines made by Donald Trump and a recent decision by the CDC to scale back recommendations for the combined MMRV vaccine for young children. This move, they argue, could potentially limit access to crucial immunizations.

Dr. Phil Huang of Dallas emphasized the importance of basing public health decisions on scientific evidence, not political agendas. “We have to be the voices for that science and reason,” he stated, highlighting the critical role local health officials play in disseminating accurate information.

Declining Trust and the Need for Unity

The credibility of the CDC has been significantly impacted, with a recent poll revealing that only half of U.S. adults trust the agency’s vaccine guidance. This erosion of trust is particularly alarming given the resurgence of preventable diseases. For instance, over 100 unvaccinated students in South Carolina were recently quarantined following a measles exposure.

Dr. Raynard Washington of Mecklenburg County stressed the importance of a unified front in public health efforts. “Our local public health system is only as strong as the weakest county or jurisdiction,” he noted, underscoring the need for consistent messaging and support across all communities to effectively combat these health threats.
