Man Arrested at ATL Airport for ‘Shoot It Up’ Threat

A potentially devastating mass shooting was narrowly avoided at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, thanks to a crucial tip from a family member. Authorities arrested a Georgia man on October 20th after he was reportedly heard making threats to “shoot it up” while streaming online.

A Family Member’s Crucial Tip

The arrest of Billy Cagle, from Cartersville, Georgia, occurred at the airport’s domestic terminal. The initial alert came from a concerned family member who overheard Cagle’s alarming threats. This vital information prompted the Cartersville police department to immediately alert airport authorities, initiating a swift response.

Security footage captured Cagle walking through the domestic terminal, appearing to survey the area without any luggage. When questioned by police about his presence, he reportedly responded dismissively, asking, “Oh, I’m just here, why?” This interaction, combined with the family’s tip, led to his apprehension.

Discovery of Weapon and Ammunition

Following Cagle’s arrest, a search of his pickup truck, parked just outside the airport facility, revealed a significant arsenal. Police discovered an AR-15 rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition, confirming the severity of the threat and the potential for mass casualties.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum commended the collaborative efforts that led to the averted crisis. “Because of the community — in this case, the family — as well as the joint collaboration of law enforcement, a tragedy was indeed averted,” he stated at a press briefing, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in public safety.

Mental Health and Criminal History

During questioning, police noted that Cagle appeared to have some mental disabilities. While the investigation into his motive is ongoing, authorities believe his actions could have led to a mass shooting. The Cartersville police department also revealed that Cagle has a prior criminal history, including an arrest for drug possession.

Cagle now faces serious charges, including terroristic threats and criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, among other counts. The FBI’s Atlanta chapter has joined forces with the city’s police department to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
