Journalist Joy Reid and a popular TikTok creator are raising serious concerns about the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after the agency allegedly used a distorted video to create a false narrative about threats to federal immigration agents. The creator whose footage was used is now considering legal action due to harassment and death threats stemming from the post.
The Controversial DHS Post
The incident began when the official X (formerly Twitter) account for Homeland Security shared a clip featuring a Black man in a ski mask standing before a group of young Black men. The caption accompanying the post read, “ICE we’re on the way. Word in the streets cartels put a $50K bounty on y’all.” This alarming message quickly led many to believe the group was issuing a direct threat to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
However, social media sleuths soon uncovered that the video was not recent and its caption had been manipulated. Side-by-side comparisons revealed that the DHS version appeared to be altered, possibly using AI enhancement. The original clip, filmed months earlier as part of a “U.S. vs. Iran” TikTok trend, contained no references to ICE or law enforcement. Furthermore, the background in the original video depicted a city skyline, a stark contrast to the basketball court shown in the DHS post.
The Creator Speaks Out Against Hacking and Misrepresentation
The man featured in the video, identified as TikTok user @mrfloridajhit, has vehemently denied posting the video or its accompanying caption. He informed his followers that his account was hacked and he had no knowledge of how the federal officials obtained or altered his footage. He stated that the other individuals in the clip were simply friends participating in a TikTok trend and were unaware their content would be misused.
Joy Reid Blasts DHS for ‘Weaponizing Anti-Blackness’
Joy-Ann Reid also condemned the DHS post, highlighting it as a disturbing example of how technology and anti-Black bias can intersect dangerously. “They essentially used this man’s video to create a fake threat against ICE from young Black men,” Reid stated in a TikTok video. “They’ve weaponized anti-Blackness—they’ve weaponized a lie that these federal agents are being threatened and that there’s a bounty on their heads.”
Reid pointed out the irony, referencing the Trump administration’s past criticisms regarding immigration raids and the separation of families. She questioned the government’s actions, asking, “If your government can steal your content to weaponize a falsity against Americans, threatening their lives, what else could they do using your social media?” She concluded that the government should focus on uplifting and informing, not fear-mongering.
